The People of Gallagher Street is a powerful drama – based on real events – an epic story of a city in conflict and the struggle for personal dignity. Set on Gallagher Street in 1932, it explores the lives of two young mill workers, Maisie who has recently become an active communist and is married to an all-round nice guy, Frankie and Rebecca who is innocent and engaged to Buster, a would-be song and dance Buster Keaton wannabe. Helen is the downtrodden wife of shipyard worker and hardman, Alec Patterson. Then there’s Coconut, a WW1 veteran with a litany of war wounds who will shift anything to try and scrape a living.

Then a mammoth event happens that throws the people of Gallagher Street – and every other street in the city of Belfast – into chaos and turns their lives upside down. But this time it’s not Catholics and Protestants carrying on their age-old war with each other.

The play was performed by a strong cast of professional actors and supported by a large group of community actors.
