Based on an acclaimed study of Irish lives in Britain by Dr Liam Harte, Martin Lynch’s powerful and moving drama gives voice to the perplexities of living with, and between, two worlds. There is sorrow, struggle and laughter, and everywhere the question is, where is home for the migrant?

The play follows Gary and Susan who are young, educated and Irish. When they can’t settle in Ireland, they make the momentous decision to emigrate to England. What ghosts will they meet along the way and where will their journey really take them?

My English Tongue, My Irish Heart sets out on an emotional and psychological journey, in which Gary and Susan’s story of love, loss and change is crisscrossed by the stories of those who have gone before them, from lawyers and labourers to pickpockets, politicians and professional street preachers.
